Surfers Can Help Spread The Word About Your Product Or Service

This is part two of a six part series on Internet users from the study done by McKinney & Media Metrix

This post covers Surfers
Surfers – the activity of browsing the Internet is often called ‘surfing’ and this group certainly lives up to that name. Surfers account for 32% of online time, far more than any other group. However, Surfers only make up about 8% of the online population.
This group visits many more pages than the average user in the hunt for what’s new. To attract this group to your site you’ll need to offer cutting-edge design and features, or content. These users are the ones who expect fresh blog posts, or a new assortment of products or services regularly.
The thrill of ‘new’ keeps the Surfer moving on in the search. While these users are less likely than Simplifiers to purchase – don’t shut the door on them.  Its human nature to want to share and Surfers are very likely to be your evangelists. If you provide them with new products and fresh content they are very likely to tell their friends about their find and send buyers or users to your site.

Know what your customer does online

Study shows you how to target your ideal customer

A new online study byMcKinney and Media Metrix at http://www.prnewswire.co.uk/cgi/news/release?id=44955 breaks internet users into 6 groups, based on their online habits.

This study can help you zero in on your group or tribe in a way that raw analytics can’t. Site stats and Google Analytics can give you lots of good information about visitors, such as where they came from, unique visits and even demographic information. While all that information is useful, there’s another static they can’t give you; the users motivation for coming to your site.

This new study breaks down the reason people come to the Internet. It segments the users based on time online, pages and domains accessed and the amount of time spent per web page. The study broke users into six segments. They are:

* Simplifiers
* Surfers
* Connectors
* Bargainers
* Routiners
* Sportsters

Let’s take a look at what the study found out about each of these segments and consider where and how to reach your market.

Over the next six posts I’ll discuss each group of users and give you marketing or business suggestions to help you target each group.

The first one is: Simplifiers

Simplifiers use the Internet to make their lives easier. They come online with a specific purpose in mind. Buying a book for example, they just want to purchase it quick and easy. Simplifiers spend less time online that most – about 7 hours a month. On the flip side they have the longest tenure on the net 49% have been using the Internet for 5 years or longer.

OK – but here is the real take away about Simplifiers – they account for over half the total transactions online! If you are in the retail sector you must provide these users with an easy to use platform, or “end to end convince.”

Simplifiers generally don’t care about coupons or comparison sites, they don’t want to read long sales copy, and are not likely to spend time socializing online. If you want to target this group, don’t expect a banner ad on Facebook to work. You may need to use social media sites to build your links, and create an authority ranking with the Search Engines, but don’t expect to engage with this group via Twitter. Simplifiers will be the ones most likely to do a Google/Yahoo/MSN search and choose the top results. Once you have a Simplifier make sure you provide them with clean navigation tools and an easy to use check-out system or they’ll leave. To build their loyalty make sure these users don’t have to jump through hoops to buy from you. Amazon.com accommodates to this group beautifully with their ‘one click check out.’

Check out the next post about Surfers. And, please feel free to leave a comment or suggestion about how you might target a Smiplifier.

Make Sure Your Customers See What They Want Right Away!

I know many readers are exploring how to monetize their websites and blogs with affiliate links.

Setting up the sites are easy, but getting lookers to stay on your site and click on the banners and links is hard. You have about about 3 seconds to capture their attention.

Knowing what the viewers will see in those first few seconds can help you put those banners and links in the best spots.

The video above shows you how to use a free heat map service to do just that.

Amazon FBA helped sellers ship over 3 million units

Amazon Fulfilment, barely on the radar of most online merchants this time last year – is catching on with many sellers. During the  2008 holiday season amazon.com shipped over 3 million units worldwide on behalf of outside sellers who used the fulfillment service.

For my business it’s a perfect fit. I didn’t want to hire help or rent a storage space. I like working from home, and want  to keep it that way! The extra fees I pay amazon to warehouse and ship products is a fraction of what I’d pay an employee.

If you’d like to learn more about Amazon FBA I did a class on it – you’ll find it inside the Web Sellers Circle membership area. It’s free – just sign up (over there on the left) and I’ll send you the login information.

See you in the circle.

The Friday Review March 27th

Go, Go, GO! is the best way to summarize this week. I was reminded at how the Internet really makes it a ‘small world’ – my business meetings and interviews were truly international. I spoke to Jamie in the UK and David in Scotland and Sharon in Florida (OK that’s not international to everyone – LOL, but it is a looooong way away from WA State)- it’s amazing how Skype and Go to Meeting software make things like that so ordinary.

This weeks roundup:

Classes, classes!

Tuesday Dany Byrne, Product Development Specialist at the websellerscircle, Janelle Elms visionaire from OSIrockstars.com, and I gave our first in the “moving outside of eBay”  classes.  It was an amazing class on the power of building a business plan, the perfect place to open the series.

I also had the pleasure of interviewing Sharon Ware, eBay Certified Store Designer and Business consultant from Dandelion Consulting. She showed us around eBay stores and gave us some valuable tips on how to maximize your eBay store branding. The video will be up in the membership area soon. (Remember access is still free – so join and watch as soon as you can).

I also had a chance to interview the wonderful Jamie Parkins from Vzaar.com. He showed us around – including how simple it is to add a video to eBay, blog and other websites. The vzaar video service will give your auctions, websitess and blog posts a professional look. Another great benefit to the Vzaar player; no links to direct viewers off your page at the end of the video, like YouTube does. Again, the interview will be up in the membership area soon. I highly recommend you check it out – video is the next big thing on the net and as a seller you don’t want to be left behind.

I’ve been playing phone tag with Phaedra Stockstill Owner/http://www.bonanzle.com/attheboutique and Ecommerce Educator and co-host of http://brainstormingbonanzle.com - she’s a Bonanzle expert – we finally had a chance to talk. What a wonderful conversation we had. I’m pretty excited about the BonanzleUps - they sound like a blast. I hope you can make it to one. She also agreed to show us more about using Bonanzle, including the batch editor sometime in April.

Dany and I  talked to David at membergate.com and got the low down on hosting videos and setting up the membership area. I’m getting pretty excited. We’ll be running the latest version of the membergate software that has advanced Web 2.0 functions. The forums will be very easy to navigate, member bios will function much the way they do on facebook and the member area is going to be simple and clean for easy navigation. Plus, we’ll finally have an easy way to have affiliates, something I’ve had many requests for but its been hard to accommodate.

That’s most of what I managed to do along with packing and shipping (sales seem to be picking up again), blogging, consulting with a favorite client and preparing taxes.

Hope you have a great weekend.

The Friday Roundup

Another week in this web sellers life.

The good – the best – LOL, the most exciting thing!

Today the ‘page proofs’ for The eBay Marketing Bible arrived. Page proofs are essentially the xeroxed pages of the book that Cliff & I re-read to make sure everything was put into proper place after the last round of edits. This is our first peak of how the book will actually look. Before now, it’s been a bunch of word documents with heading and formatting tags.

So, it really feels like reality now. After months of writing and collaboration it’s come together. WooHOO!

Of course, the first thing I had to look at was the screen captures of all the eBay stores we used – and they look great. I can’t thank everyone enough for letting me use their eBay stores for examples. Now, I have to go back and read the words…

I had a fantastic interview and learned a lot about Vendio – Michael and Dan were great. Vendio.com has a lot of automation tools that will make a cross channel sellers life much easier – plus their new store. If you want to learn more the screencast is available now in the membership area.

The other stuff, not so great…

I think schools are having a heck of a time with enrollment due to the current economic climate.

This week I had two classes canceled due to lack of enrollment – an eBay Business class and an Online Basics class.

Not sure why, I would have thought people would be investing in learning to keep a competitive edge.  I also lost a big contract because the school lost funding. It was one of my most lucrative gigs – drat!

What The Heck Is A Bonanzle UP?

bonanzle

Glad you asked! It’s a grass roots event born from the Bonanzle.com forums.

It started as a few members suggesting they get together for lunch and went viral….

Now it’s an event you are invited to attend - for the moment it’s only scheduled in three cities.

  1. Seattle – May 16th
  2. Wichita – May 23th
  3. Mobile – May 30th

This event is still taking shape, but one thing we know for sure is it will be fun. Co-founder Mark Dorsey will be in Seattle and promises to broadcast live for an hour at other upcoming events. He’s making himself available to answer questions about the site.

Want more information – or to start your own area Bonanzleup – visit the official website.

Sounds like fun – I’m off to register for the Seattle BonazleUP – hope to see you there.

NeatOScan For Amazon Selling

   I just wanted to let you know that the exclusive Web Sellers’ Circle interview with Dennis Royzenfeld from Neatoscan.com is now available to members.
Dennis is the creator of Neatoscan and it was fun to hear about his pride and joy. Not only did Dennis introduce us to the tool he gave us a few industry insider tips.

A few of the things Dennis covered:

1. The Neatoscan tool
2. Not just for books (you can scan anything in the Amazon catalog with a bar code)
3. Listen up – he gives valuable numbers on sell through rates
4. A FREE resource for finding book sales in your area – no more spending hours looking through the newspaper!
5. A new desktop solution for product sourcing on the Internet

The interview is a little under an hour, so grab a cup of coffee and be prepared to take notes. Also be a little patient with the file - it’ll take a few minutes to start once you click onto the link – until then you’ll see a blank, dark gray screen.

You’ll find the Neatoscan interview in the video tutorials section in the members area. To join enter your email address in the box on the right side of this page.

Don’t forget: You’ll have complete and free access to the member area until sometime in May – then we are turning it over to a subscription site.

There’s still time to get in on the Lifetime Membership deal!

I want to thank those who have the foresight to have already purchased their lifetime membership. You know the quality content we will provide to you as members. I know our offer doesn’t appeal to everyone, but I can assure those who do – will have a lifetime of benefit in the ever-changing word or Internet eCommerce and product development.
